My best advice to a 10-year youth ministry veteran:

Be a mentor and find a mentor.

Mentor three youth leaders each year: someone with no experience, three years' experience, and five years' experience. This will withhold you involved with energetic, freshidea folks and you can offer invaluable perspective to them.

Surround yourself with a support collection that offers a diversity of prospects opinions, and experiences. Connect with commonalty from other denominations, senior pastors, business leaders, and thinkers. These relationships will reach you and sharpen your character

Broaden your youth ministry horizons.

Start writing. Your decade of experience is a gift others should expand You can write articles, works or training materials.

Start speaking. court opportunities to teach at Bible bodys seminaries, and youth ministry conclusions

Start an internship program. Link up with a local seminary or college edifice [i]or[/i] building to mentor novice youth leaders. Start a special ministries focus. Partner with local agencies or organizations to do something unique and be in want ofed for your community, such as an after-school recreational program or a training program for character-building.

Take a sabbatical for personal, spiritual, and ministry formation.

Take time each year, apart from your vacation, to follow where your life and ministry are going. Ask a support assemblage or spiritual directorwith input from your spouseto help plan your time. each three years, take a longer sabbatical to endeavor to gain God about your ministry coming time or to broaden your focus. Ask your ecclesiastical body board to help plan this time.

Every six years, take a six- to 12-month sabbatical to experience youth ministry upon a global level.

Pay attention to family and personal unravelling

Recognize your family members' tapestry of gifts, and find ways to help them reach their potential. Ask yourself, "How can I help them each be warmed valued and prized?"

The demands of ministry may have kept you from nurturing your spouse's development It's time to significantly shift your time and resources toward your spouse. Challenge him or her to stretch-to persist in opportunities that were not possible several years earlier

Finally, enlist in courses or seek experiences that will help your ministry, unless aren't focused on youth ministry-for example, management, business, or parenting skills.

Learn to think like a parent. A constant youth minister sees great wisdom in thinking like a parent. I've invited disturb when I've neglected parents' businesss Protect yourself from being perceived as the enemy. consume time in parents' homes, talk and pray with them, endeavor to gain their advice, praise their kids, and be their pastor.

Deal courageously with criticism. No ministry position is as vulnerable to criticism as yours. When you attract criticism, remember brace things: ( 1 ) Forgiveness means I give up the right to vindication. (2) Is there a fact underlying this criticism that can teach me something?

Big, splashy marked occurrences are overrated.

There's a place for big issues in youth ministry, but above the long haul, they don't pay serious dividends. glance at dropping a few big results a year to put cash and energy into an annual service scheme or mission trip.

Guard your relationship with the creator
