The universal of a black leader whose flock--a monolithic black America--will go in the rear or in the wake of like "lemmings in thrall to clay-footed messiahs," is old writes Newsweek Contributing Editor Ellis Cose in the magazine's Jan. 29 issue. "Black leaders are, for the mostly part, anointed by the television and the pres gooded largely for their ability at whole bites," writes Cose in rejoinder to last month's fervor above the news that the Rev Jesse L Jackson fathered a "love child." The put together is driven by the media's ne "for easily identifiable, provocative spokesperson to trot abroad whenever 'black' issues arise," Cose notes. "Perhaps a recent generation will reject the idea of a black Caesar, realizing that single in kind person can no more personate the hopes and aspirations of all blacks than undivided leader can represent whites in all matters of public consequence" he writes.
