To the Editor: MPC applauds The Chicago Reporter's in-depth analysis (November/December 2000) of changes in the Bronzeville community as the CHA implements its "Plan for Transformation" and the private market answers to a revitalizing neighborhood. The article highlights the be of importance to that long-time community and public housing residents will be priced revealed of the market. The Metropolitan Planning Council not long ago released the first in a series of CHA progres reports titled, "Public Housing in the Public Interest: Chicago Housing Authority Transformation Plan Update." We support recently made known mixed-income communities like what's planned at the CHA's Madden Park and Ida B Wells exhibitions (1,000 market-rate, 1,000 affordable and 1000 public housing units) because they can show residents greater opportunities to participate in to the broader community. However, our research notes that 2400 public housing units will be missing at Madden/Wells, and many families who opt for gap vouchers will be seeking housing in an extremely tight private rental market. MPC will continue to move information and ideas about challenges facing the CHA as they undertake the massive overhaul of their entire inventory between the sides of our quarterly fact sheets. We invite everyone to come next this undertaking through accessing our progres reports online at www.metroplanning.org.
