More population in this country can identify with the Cleveland Indians' mascot--Chief Wahoo--than a real Native American similar as Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord, writes columnist Rick Telander in the May 7 Chicago Sun-Times. "The wildly grinning, fire-engine-red-faced, befeathered, moronic-looking, bobble-headed Chief Wahoo is so much a part of our civilization that he is almost comforting." Alvord, associate dean of observer and minority affairs at Dartmouth Medical sect and a Navajo, appears in a of the present day ad sponsored by the American Indian literary institution or seminary of learning Fund. The ad asks "Have You aye Seen A Real Indian?" Telander writes that the Native Americans who appear in these ads "send the message that being objectified as a commonalty for someone else's pleasure is a daily, demeaning experience."
