Allowing a mountaintop in Pocatello...
Allowing a mountaintop in Pocatello, Idaho, to continue to be dubbed "Chinks Peak" exhalations of insensitivity, writes columnist Emil Guillermo in the July 26 Asian Week "I pondering it was a joke," he notes. "It's not." Earlier this year, the Idaho Geographic Names Advisory Council reopen a discussion about the name of the peak. Guillermo writes that council members speculate the peak may have been named after a Chinese family or the cracks and fissures in the rock--"all those fine and interesting chinks." yet Guillermo doesn't buy it, writing that no single in kind claims to know the history of the peak. And at the import the name is "something to marvel at, a natural remembrancer and constant reminder of racial hatred." COPYRIGHT 2001 Community Renewal Society COPYRIGHT 2001 Gale Group
