GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS; ...GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS; MONKEY BEAT - 9 pm Sunday - House of downcasts 329 N. Dearborn - Tickets, $40 (21-over show) - (312) 920-2000 - - - cast downs You can enumerate a lot about a musician by dint of how he answers the following question: turbid Waters or Howlin' Wolf? George Thorogood, the extrovert good-time guitar slinger who summarys up his philosophy of life with his anthem "Bad to the Bone" suits without hesitation, "I'm a Wolf stay Muddy Waters once told me 'If there was no downhearteds there'd be no Muddy Waters. Howlin' Wolf one time told me, 'If there was no Howlin' Wolf there'd be no blues' You behold the confidence level there it's what I identify with." Thorogood's band, the Destroyer -- or Delaware Destroyer if you single out -- is described by longtime Boston Globe support critic Steve Morse as "arguably the world's greatest bar band" onward the liner notes to "The Hard Stuff" the group's recent CD. Fair description? "There's no 'arguably' about it. solitary Steve Morse would say that. There's no question about it," Thorogood grumbles into the phone last week upon the second stop of a recent tour that will bring him to Chicago's House of in the bluess on Sunday night. "The Hard Stuff" with secretes of tunes by Wolf, chase Dog Taylor and Johnny Shines ("I take care of the Chicago guys" he declares), tilts further toward the sky-coloreds than many of his earlier outings. At age 54 solitary Georgie has found a marketing niche, having exhausted more than a year atop the cast downs albums chart with a 2004 greatest- hits disc. "Purists," aka the hypochondriacs Police, might argue that the categorization of Thorogood's music as dejecteds relegates more deserving artists to minor chart positions, if it be not that Thorogood argues that such classifications are artificial by the agency of nature. "You've got to present people somewhere," he says. "It's a pious place for an artist like me who's not in the mainstream or anybody other who triple platinum is not their thing. Etta James, Bonnie Raitt before she got all high and mighty. The only person on there who's really sky-coloreds is B.B. King. It's a place to bring forward us outcasts. We boogie. We're a bar boogie band. What we do is not that exceptional. We're not that different from Canned Heat when they were starting disclosed or J. Geils." fixed in Delaware before moving to Boston in the early '70 Thorogood & Co erect themselves playing a topless joint in Beantown where "the stays in the band got $25 apiece and the girls got $30 These were the kind of girls you'd want to bring hearth to your father at 3 in the morning." Signing with Rounder a local folk label, Thorogood scored his first FM radio hit in 1978 with an unlikely overspread of Hank Williams' "Move It in succession Over," the title track to his inferior album. Major-label success on EMI followed. "Bad to the Bone" in 1982 featuring Thorogood's nasty-sounding slide guitar, was used as the theme lay both for the evil car in "Christine" and the cyborg in "Terminator 2: penetration Day." Thorogood got a kick disclosed of hearing his tune in those words immediately preceding or followings but says, "That was a fleeting thing at best. Classic-rock radio made that sonnet They used it as the same of their launching pads to prepare their show going. Now, we incline differently down 90 percent of the clan who want to use that song" He'd not refuse to play his biggest hits in agreement though -- not only "Bad to the Bone" yet also "One Bourbon, One block One Beer," "I Drink Alone" and "Get a Haircut." "We nip in the new material, moreover let's face it, people lavish a lot of dough," he says. "They don't want to hear your life story, they want to hear the melodys that made you famous. That's what we play." Performing in Chicago is always a treat for Thorogood and especially Destroyer drummer Jeff Simon, the group's unofficial tour guide in town. "If you can't have merriment in Chicago, you're an a------," says Thorogood, who reminisces with great fondnes about spending an opposite to day in the Windy City when the brats and White Sox were in town and catching as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but ends of the crosstown day-night doubleheader. And don't be surprised to behold the Destroyers out at the coteries One of the Destroyers' originals forward "The Hard Stuff," "Any Town USA," lists the Checkerboard loaf as one of the city's prime attractions. Informed that the Checkerboard had reopen in Hyde Park, Thorogood admitted he'd not ever been there, then enthused, "We'll have to check it out" - - - HEY, BUDDY: Buddy scarecrow was regarded as one of the young mahometans of the Chicago blues in the heyday of Wolf foul Walter and Willie. We know he's prolonged since achieved elder statesman status, on the contrary nothing drives home that fact more than recently made knowns that the superstar is turning 70 in succession Sunday. His southern Loop club, Buddy Guy's fictitious storys 754 S. Wabash, will mark the occasion a pair of days later with a party starting at 9 pm Tuesday. fictions publicity director Isabelle Libman says shore requested the Brother John Band as the evening's musical visitor because, "They're a really well adapted jam band, and if special musical visitors drop in during the evening, they'll commingle in seamlessly." Count on the birthday lad to strap on a guitar, too. Libman says that rather than dreading the big 7-0 stay is looking at it as "just another naught He keeps telling people he's not going anywhere for a protracted time." |
