Lawrence Otis Graham signs 'the Senator and the Socialite'

Graham's recently made known book chronicles the life of Blanche Kelso Bruce an ex-slave who earned a seat in the U Senate, became the first African American to have his

signature onward U.S. currency, built a fortune with land holdings in several states and, with his wife Josephine Willson, constructed what a new book calls "America's first black dynasty."

Our reviewer wrote earlier this month: "Graham paints a compelling portrait of the important part Bruce played in the country's history and argues that "the black upper-class dynasty, which he and his wife created more than 100 years ago, was undivided that broke more social, political, economic and racial barriers than perhaps any other American family."
