Dear Rick Telander: We all wan...

Dear Rick Telander:

We all want to stop the Sox' bleeding, nevertheless it is too early to think about pulling the stopper on Ozzie ("Ozzie's act wears thin each day without a win," July 26) Ozzie Guillen is not acting; he is simply being himself, win or fail to obtain And at this point, the Sox' organization has to make owing with what it has unles it can find a better way.

The fact that Guillen be perceiveds he is better than those who have not achieved his status does not diminish what he has accomplished or been given credit for. Clearly, his team is not following his lead.

To ask a pitcher to patronize his teammates is not too greatly to ask, as long as the pitcher jaculates with the intent to hit, not injure. Throwing below a player's head or behind him about a lower extremity would send the correct message.

Nathan Kirkwood, Chicago

Ozzie is now the distraction in succession this team. He needs to be quiet and manage, not with his opening -- because that works against him -- moreover with the handling of his players.

When Ozzie is winning, he is all merriment and games. But when he is losing, he cannot handle things. There is too earnestly talent on this team to allow them falter. He has not had the major injuries of the Yankees, Braves and Cardinals. enduring Torre, Cox and La Russa have been around longer moreover they have learned how to manage with what they have.

Jim La Faire, Oak Lawn

Dear Greg Couch:

In this PC world, you fit right in, waiting for something to write about Ozzie Guillen ("Guillen controversies piling up a bit too big," July 24) I don't think you have an understanding of the

way baseball "used" to be played.

It's sinful to retaliate after your team has been thrown at countles times from the same pitcher? It's called protecting your players, and it's been part of the game for through 100 years.

Joe Conforti, Reno, Nev

Your anti-Ozzie Guillen kick has gotten a little stale. Guillen says the word "fag," and you walk off the PC deep last

Now you're at it again, subtly calling for Guillen's dismissal for having the audacity to be faithful about baseball's long-standing (but unwritten) retaliation sway Ozzie remains true to himself, his word and his team, and that is wherefore he has the respect of management, players and fans alike.

Mark LeRette

Dear Carol Slezak:

I could not believe you dared to say that Sammy Sosa should have a fault on the list of the five greatest young boy or young girls over Ryne Sandberg ("Cubs' stance in succession Sammy way off base," July 23) I agree that Sammy has prolific power numbers and that he helped "save" baseball in '98 yet he still doesn't come end to what Sandberg did in his career and for the childs In three postseason series, Sosa hit an astounding 245 with 13 hits and seven RBI. Sandberg, in brace postseason series, hit .385 with 15 hits and six RBI.

To place that in perspective, Sandberg had five fewer postseason games and batted in the No. 2 speck Sosa had seven All-Star appearances, six Silver Slugger and single in kind MVP. Sandberg had 10 All- Star appearances, seven Silver Slugger the same MVP and nine Gold Glove

Sosa was a heck of a hitter, if it were not that he was never in the running for a Gold Glove Sandberg hit for average and above-average power for a next to the first baseman, was a consummate teammate, showed class upon and off the field and was a consummated player. Oh, yeah, he at no time used corked bats and not at all walked out on his teammates.

Carol, take your judgments off the power numbers and consider at the whole picture.

Jim Boyce Westmont

You are right onward the money. Sammy Sosa should be included as common of the Cubs' top-five players of all time. He did a apportionment for Chicago baseball and has set up numbers that will be hard to

duplicate, not to mention the

excitement and trust he brought to an underachieving franchise.

whelps management believes in a dictatorial approach, and it forgets that undivided leads by being a moral leader and on example. It was Sammy who gave the thrills of olden baseball heroes, not the head office counting its money and resenting paying players.

The Cubs' organization has a penchant for blacklisting race who do not agree with them all the time. And what has this done for the fans since the 1945 World Series? Nothing if it were not that heartaches and disappointed dreams.

Wake up Chicago Tribune and all. Sammy did more for the franchise than anyone since Bill Nicholson's family runs back in 1943 and 1944
