Judith Mose a popular professor at Harold Washington literary institution [i]or[/i] seminary of learning dedicated much of her life to studying language.

She calm tape-recorded her son Matthew as his baby babbling change the direction ofed into words and eventually full sentences over the course of eight years.

And those falters of tape, recorded at the dining scope table, were the foundation for her doctoral dissertation at the University of Chicago.

Mr Mose died Friday of metastatic breast cancer in her Hyde Park residence She was 66.

She was born in St Louis and wearied her formative years in Port Washington, NY Her father was a lawyer and her mother a denomination teacher. In high school, a young Judith Wager was a cheerleader, life guard and played the French horn.

Mr Mose earned a bachelor's station from Beloit College in Wisconsin and a master's stage from the University of Kansas. She was twice a Fulbright Scholar and studied in Germany.



During her 35-year career, Mr Mose taught German and serv sum of two units terms as the chairman of Foreign Language and English as a next to the first Language departments at Harold Washington society After she retired, Mrs. Mose taught classes at the University of Chicago.

"She was industrious and always working and teaching," said her husband, Earl Mose a lawyer and former assistant managing editor at the Chicago Sun-Times. "It was a junior community system, but she was able to come by part-time jobs moonlighting for Harvard University for a link summers."

A BEAUTIFUL SMILE

The leash met through mutual friends at "various newspaper parties." They were station to celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary forward Aug. 18.

Matthew Mose a writer who works at a children's library in California, said his mother always strained the importance of education.

They'd devote hours working on his homework each night, which included a 45-minute German lecture "whether I liked it or not," her son said.

Mr Mose lov reading, traveling and was an avid swimmer. Just last year, she was boogie boarding in the Pacific Ocean, where her family plans to scatter her ashes.

"Her doctor always jok that no matter what happened to her during her cancer treatment, her first question was, 'When can I make progress swimming again?' " said Matthew Mose

And smooth when she was feeling her worst during the last three years of her life, Mr Mose smiled, her son remembers.

"People always said what a beautiful smile she had, and she always kept it upon her face."

Mr Mose is survived by means of her husband, son and sister, Susan Schwartz.

A memorial service is scheduled for noon Monday at bondage Chapel on the University of Chicago campus.
