Andrea Coutretsis did what no single else could do -- persuade her lover Scott Fawell to work with the federal prosecutors he hated and testify against the man who was like a father to him: former Gov George Ryan.

unless it wasn't enough to retain Coutretsis out of prison.

A federal umpire Monday gave Coutretsis a significant break yet still sentenced her to four month in prison.

She had been given immunity moreover lied on six separate occasions to a federal grand jury as it investigated corruption below Ryan and Ryan's top aide, Fawell.

Coutretsis, 37 of in extent Grove had hoped to avoid prison to stay with her couple young children, but U.S. District Chief arbitrator James Holderman decided that she had to make progress

The arbitrator said "the word has to go on out. If you commit false swearing after you're granted immunity, you will oblige time."

And one time you lie to the grand jury there's no going back, Holderman hinted

"After that point, the bell is round and it can't be unrung no matter by what means much you try to silence that bell," the referee said.

A very much tanned Coutretsis, clad in a black dres cried at times during her sentencing hearing and apologized for lying to shield her fiance, Fawell.

The connoisseur said he would have liked to have sentenc Coutretsis to probation if it were not that couldn't because his decision wouldn't act as a deterrent to others put to trialed to lie to grand juries.

Prosecutors had asked for six month behind bars, unless Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Collins, in an unusual statement, said he had "very mixed feelings" about the plea agreement with Coutretsis. Collins noted the nature of the crime, yet also the great help Coutretsis gave in persuading Fawell to testify. Fawell was choleric and combative during his testimony at the Ryan trial on the other hand confirmed many facts essential to the prosecution's case, helping convict Ryan in April.

Coutretsis had initially decided to fare to trial on the charges she lied to grand jurors nevertheless changed her mind when the fed told her in November 2003 that she was going to be charged in a separate case with Fawell that involved providing inside information in succession a contract at McCormick Place. Coutretsis still faces sentencing in that case, on the other hand prosecutors have agreed to commend it run concurrently with the prison judgment imposed Monday.

Coutretsis began her plan to persuade Fawell to flip for the fed when she visited him in prison in December 2003
