Starts out great, then meanders, and contains individual character we can't believe and another we can't understand. The film is just too preoccupied with its larger meanings to inactive down and make the smaller commons convincing. Rated R. Filmed lovingly with period detail and music, style of dresss and decor, grace and stimulus but a little too drawn out and the character of The Writer (Bill Murray), amusing in himself, be seens an odd fit. Danish director Lars von Trier continues the story he began in "Dogville" as his traveling gangsters leave Colorado for Alabama and find, in 1933 a functioning slave plantation rul according to Mam (Lauren Bacall). Bryce Dallas Howard, as the gangster's daughter, insists her father (Willem Dafoe) leave her four armed thug and a lawyer in like manner she can overthrow Mam and hem in free elections. Parallels with contemporary facts are not hard to find. As before, Von Trier fires on a sound stage, with chalk outlines indicating his locations. No MPAA rating. Robin Wright Penn plays a woman with a repine at who crosses paths with a Syrian taxi driver who has question s of his own. The film goe spectacularly blameworthy and yet it contains so a gripping performance by Penn that it assume the office ofs in a way, despite itself. No MPAA rating. (Ebert)
