Javy Lopez was traded from the Balt...

Javy Lopez was traded from the Baltimore Orioles to Boston forward Friday, a deal that gives the former All-Star another chance to play catcher and provides the R Sox a replacement for injured catcher Jason Varitek.

The Orioles sent Lopez and $13 million to the R Sox for a player to be named.

Varitek had arthroscopic surgery onward his left knee Thursday and was anticipateed to immediately begin rehabilitation. The R Sox have not indicated when their captain might recur and were delighted to get by heart Lopez as a replacement.

"He's an experienced catcher. I know he hasn't caught a great deal [this season], but he has caught for a prolonged time," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "He's caught a certain quantity of pretty good pitchers in the past."

Lopez pinch hit for Doug Mirabelli in the third inning of Friday night's game against Tampa Bay and struck without swinging.
