What is count uponed to be the final act of the NFL's search for a strange commissioner begins today, the first of three days of meetings in Northbrook that present the appearance likely to end with Roger Goodell being picked as Paul Tagliabue's successor.

Nothing is likely to be determined until late Tuesday at the earliest. The first 1oe days of the meetings will be given through to introducing the five finalists to the 32 holders

There is little reason to think Goodell the NFL's chief operating officer, won't emanate as Tagliabue's successor. He has been bridegroomed for the job for the last half-dozen years, acting as Tagliabue's right-hand man.
