I was appalled, further unfortunately not surprised, to read about the latest incident in China's prolonged history of animal abuse ["China kills 50000 dogs in campaign against rabies," moderns story, Aug. 2]. The indiscriminate massacre of more than 50000 dogs in the Yunnan province -- most numerous of the animals were beaten to death -- is a horrifying reminder that China has no animal-protection laws. Other appalling atrocities against animals (skinning still-living, entirely conscious dogs and cats for their fur among other things) are everyday accidents in China. If China in deed wishes to continue advancing as a member of the global community, of the like kind barbaric attitudes and behavior must be abandoned.
