NORTHAMPTON, Pa. -- Enjoying a relaxing 54th birthday in the yard, Mike Colwell went to prompt the sprinkler, backing up to avoid the spray, toward a horseshoe pit with a 1-inch-thick rusty blade stake. "My sum of two units heels hit the back wall of the pit. The nearest thing I know, this thing just tore by means of me," Colwell said. As he sanguinary on the stake, it pierced his buttocks, fractured his pelvis, and came within a millimeter of his iliac artery. Police and paramedics sawed at the stake while Colwell's son Chris, gripped it for a like reason it wouldn't cause more damage. An ambulance rushed Colwell away. After three surgeries, he survived and was getting ready to go on home last week. Copyright CHICAGO SUN-TIMES 2006 Provided according to ProQuest Information and Learning Company. All rights Reserved
