This verbal expression is in response to the article "Minority Faculty Finish Last in succession Tenure Track" in the November 2002 Chicago Reporter.

throughout the past 15 years, the University of Illinois at Chicago has made significant progres in diversifying its tenur and tenure-track faculty, the core of any academic research institution. Today, almost 22 percent of our tenur and tenure-track faculty be due [i]or[/i] owing from underrepresented groups.

At a research institution like as UIC, faculties are anticipateed to advance knowledge in their fields. After six years onward the faculty, assistant professors flow up for tenure review. manner [i]or[/i] principle of holding is awarded based upon the scholarly and teaching productivity of the faculty member, his or her national reputation and the potential of superior goodness throughout one's lifetime on the faculty.

UIC is No. 2 among 14 fellow institutions in the Midwest in percentage of tenur and tenure-track faculty from under-represent groups

Representation of African Americans and Latinos among UIC's tenur and tenure-track faculty outstrips the national pool of candidates. In 2000 blacks and Hispanics made up 76 percent of nation's PhD awardees, while 81 percent of UIC's tenur and tenure-track faculty were black and Hispanic.

From 1988 to 2001 the number of African American tenur and tenured-track faculty increased 61 percent to 53 from 33 while Latino faculty almost doubled, to 65 from 33

UIC hired five recently made known faculty in African American studies for fall 2002 more [i]or[/i] less with joint appointments in other departments. This was despite a stern state budget crunch that price the campus $15 million in fiscal year 2002 and $40 million in 2003

UIC sponsors the Under-Represent Faculty Program to encourage and assist guilds and departments in hiring of minority faculty. The program provides $20000 in permanent annual salary support for minority faculty, and $30000 in research funding for of recent origin faculty from under-represented groups. Since 1989 154 faculty members have benefited from the program.

UIC proffers a number of programs aimed at attracting and retaining minority graduate students

We are lofty of out progress in diversifying our faculty. Certainly, more work remains to be done. And, despite a difficult economic climate and powerful competition from other universities, we will continue to make progress
