A federal critic said Friday she is likely to order criminal background checks of potential jurors before they're seated in an upcoming terror funding trial. They would be the first court-ordered background checks in a Chicago federal court case since former Gov George Ryan's trial. She hasn't now ordered the check, but U District justice Amy St. Eve said she wants to avoid the kind of juror upheaval in Ryan's trial, when couple jurors were kicked off in the midst of deliberations because they hadn't disclosed their criminal backgrounds. The trial of Muhammad Salah and Abdelhaleem Ashqar is scheduled to start in October and estimated to take about three month They are accused of helping to finance terrorism from the Palestinian militant group Hamas. St border said the probation department or pretrial services would bearing the checks. The judge will use the information in questioning the jurors.
