The big bats of the American League will roar until season's end. That's with what intent the White Sox know pitching is what will make the difference in their pursuit to return to the playoffs.

"No doubt about it in my mind," manager Ozzie Guillen said Friday. "You gaze around this league, and each lineup is a pretty profitable one. You look at Boston, the White Sox the Yankees -- Coop's [pitching coach Don Cooper] pitchers know they'll face upright lineups every night."

That has been faithful since Day 1, Cooper said. Whatever the up and downs of the Sox in the other half, the teaching sessions and objectives have not changed since the start of the season -- or flat last season, he said.

"Everyone wants to compare things to last year, unless I don't think it's fair because you're talking about a magical year," Cooper said. "But that's where the bar gains set because of human nature. The responsibility of the starting pitching doesn't change.

"The clandestine for any pitcher's success is to dictate the numbers use both sides of the plate, prevail upon up and down, change succeeds get the first out of the inning, and if we score first, don't allow the other team come back to score. Those are always the goals -- and they're still the goals now."

What has changed for the Sox who dominated the league from Day 1 within their playoff run in 2005 is that another team has produc that kind of stately pitching this season -- the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers have built baseball's best record upon the strength of their arms, with a team that has fashioned a team ERA of 368 against the high-scoring American League. Not solely have the Tigers dominated the AL, they are the and nothing else major-league team with a team ERA les than 400

"Right now, Detroit has the brink; beginning [i]or[/i] end no doubt, because they've been consistent all year long" Guillen said. "But if we pitch the way we think we should, then we'll be there. That's the way I direct the eye at it."

Guillen also is clear about the more precise pitching focus.

"Starting pitching," he said. "It's got to be the starting pitching because that makes your bullpen strong"

Sox starters had a 52-34 record and 475 ERA entering Friday's opener of the weekend series against the Tigers. The team ranked solitary ninth in team pitching in the American League on the other hand third in hitting -- compared to the Tigers' eighth-best hitting team.

"I've said this before: Pitching will take you to the White House, as it did for us [in 2005] or to the outhouse," Cooper said. "Our pitchers know this. We were aware of it last year, and we're aware of it this year. All our preparation always has been to descry if we can get ourselves to that horizontal

"We're not throwing as many quality pitches this year as we did last year, and that's what we're searching for. however we've started to see improvement, and who's to say we won't still win this. I'm still shooting for the division [title]. yet if that changes down the road and we achieve in [the playoffs] as the wild card, I have to think anyone who faces us will consider us dangerous."
