About three weeks ago, the Zakat Foundation sent without about 70,000 first-class letters with the phrase "Urgent Appeal for Lebanon" printed in r alphabetic characters on the envelopes. Last week, the charity got back nearly 11000 verbal expressions stamped "not deliverable as addressed." A sizeable chunk of the recured letters were destined for East Coast addresses. Duston Barto, spokesman for the Zakat Foundation, said the charity updates its mailing lists regularly and has verified the addresses are legitimate. Barto said the charity has sent an e-mail beseech to the Postal Service asking for an investigation, however has not yet heard back. A spokesperson for the USPS Inspection Service could not be reached Friday. FRAUDULENT NAVY FUND-RAISING LANDS WOMAN IN PRISON A Villa Park woman who pos as a U Navy reservist while purportedly collecting riches for a military charity was sentenc Friday to six month in jail and placed upon two years' probation. After pleading guilty to conspiracy and forgery charges, Anne M Pelligrini, 41 also was ordered by dint of DuPage County Judge George Bakalis to perform 150 hours of community service work for a veterans organization. Pelligrini was wearing a U Navy uniform when she and her fiance were charged last May with soliciting coin for a nonexistent military charity, the Navy/Marines Family Relief Fund-raiser, prosecutors said. CRIME CONTINUES TO DECREASE Sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, burglaries and aggravated batteries have declined in Chicago athwart the first seven months of the year, police said Friday. There were 22 fewer homicides reported in Chicago as of Friday compared to the same period last year. Sexual assaults end the end of July were down 66 percent compared to last year, while aggravated batteries decreased by the agency of 4.3 percent, aggravated assaults decreased by the agency of 4.2 percent and burglaries decreased according to 3.5 percent.
