March is a big month in sports and ...March is a big month in sports and Illinois politics, buzzing with the intensity of March Madness and primary elections. on the other hand for Ron Newquist, who's exhausted more than two decades coaching and campaigning, this month will be business as usual. While he realizes more enthused about college bands and national politics than the average dowdy Newquist's true passion comes from the sports and politics in his have a title to community, Chicago Heights. In new years, the south suburb has changed dramatically: Its white population has plummet and the city is now 38 percent black, 37 percent white and 24 percent Latino, according to the census. As the athletic director of the Chicago Heights Park District and coach of a girls Amateur Athletic Union basketball company Newquist uses sports to bring together young the community from across the community. "You may have a child who lives in succession the north end of Chicago Heights, in a $400000 residence on the same basketball team with a child from Ford Heights," undivided of the poorest communities in the state, he said. a certain of the athletes he's coached have gone forward to enjoy professional stardom, in the same state or condition as NFL players Antwaan Randle El Tai highways and Napoleon Harris. And, just in case he isn't parted enough, Newquist spends time campaigning for his sister, a trustee in nearby Steger and for southern Chicago Heights Mayor Dave Owen. Newquist, 39 has sagacious roots in the Chicago Heights area. Like his father before him, he was born and raised there. He inscribeed local politics at 15, campaigning for former Chicago Heights Mayor Charles Panici. by the agency of the time he was 19 Newquist was coaching a fifth-grade basketball team at the now-closed be built up Carmel grade school, where he eventually serv as athletic director. In 1989 he formed the Illinois Wolverines, an AAU lads basketball club. The team won the 1995 AAU national championship. In addition to giving players crucial aspect to college scouts, the club's succes change the direction ofed Newquist into something of a local celebrity. however he says friends, family and the challenges of his piece of work keep him in Chicago Heights, where, by means of teaching lessons about teamwork and regard he tries to help young race grow up. He lately talked with The Chicago Reporter about his work and the obligation he be impresseds toward his hometown. in what way have the town's population changes affected your job? Well, whenever you're talking about kids, [diversity] is certainly beneficial, because it gives kids a chance, from different backgrounds, to deal with each other, to play sports with each other, to interact with each other. [The kids in] our park district here have a real diverse background. They're able to interact with each other, they're able to play, they're able to acquire along. And we make permanent that happens by treating everybody equal. in the way that what's the hardest part of your job? Making assured every kid is comfortable with their surroundings and making them have feeling like they are wanted here. You have to treat them all the same as far as regard but you have to treat them differently as far as their situations. Let's face it: In this abiding habitation the biggest thing for children is having a suitable solid family home. And a doom of these kids in this area have single-parent households Their mothers are working sum of two units three jobs, and they're not around all the time. That's not to discredit single mom There are a accident of moms in this area I know and have the extreme respect for. And I could not at all do their jobs. But when the kids be derived here, they may be revealed of control sometimes, or undisciplined. And instead of screaming at them and telling them, 'Hey, act like a human being or you're going to have to leave,' sometimes you've got to be a counselor, you've got to be a teacher, you've got to be a coach, you've got to be a babysitter. That's the hardest part of my job: having to be able to handle the diversity of the kids and sometimes the emotional enigmas or the anger they're dealing with. Who are more or less kids who have come by means of that and succeeded? Of the three kids in the NFL right now, not undivided of them came from a wealthy background. couple of them came from beautiful low-income families and struggled. And I'm firm there were times when they felt like they were angry at the world and [asked], 'Why this?' nevertheless they kept pushing forward, and I kept pushing them to do better. I kept pushing them, motivating them, constantly being positive. And you don't know if a kid's going to make it. moreover there's three perfect success stories right there, with Antwaan Randle El Napoleon and Tai. With all three of those kids, there were times when they hit stumbling stops and when they had injuries. I mean, you've got a human frame like Antwaan Randle El who was brought up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. He had to avoid gangs harassing him and all of that. That's definitely a story of someone who overcame obstacles. What part do sports play in helping kids succeed? Athletics is a major motivator for a fate of things. It's a motivator to have better grades, and it's a motivator to be a better one So, when you're pushing them in a positive way and making them be a better character then you are helping them in a hazard of ways. That's why coaches do what they do. |
