A cough that wouldn't pass away ha...

A cough that wouldn't pass away had turned into an emergency-room visit for the 1-year-old girl, a relative's baby. A scarcely any inhaler treatments seemed to clear it up admitting the doctors never did really explain what the enigma was. An Internet search revealed she had received asthma medications, allowing no one had said she should be treated for that disease. My solely clue about the possible trigger came earnestly later, in a casual conversation with her mother. "She was better when we didn't smoke" the young woman revealed.

It's a familiar dilemma to health professionals. Curing a child's illness is individual thing, changing their environment is another. Asthma and lead poisoning, it cause to deviates out, aren't just diseases. They are symptoms--of poor air quality, of aging housing, of inadequate health care, of need and of unawareness, even among the mostly loving parents.

Nonetheless, relating to investigating these growing health question at issues for children, we were still conflicted to learn how poorly our tax dollars are arming parents to fight upon these fronts.

although the area is commonly known as a national asthma epicenter, health departments in Chicago and give a color to County lack centralized programs to tackle the disease--and they're a pace ahead of most collar counties, which lack data in succession it altogether. The city also boasts the highest percentage of lead-poisoned children in the nation. yet Chicago loses out when it be due or owings to funding, with many of its families left languishing, while smaller communities carve through the red tape to resolve into the hazard quickly.

Instead of comprehensive asthma care, parents are sent to extremity rooms. Instead of fast lead cleanups, parents are directed to wash their children's hands and retain their houses clean.

These issues were serious enough that we decided to join forces with Chicago Parent in examining them, lending the Reporter's investigative know-how to single of the region's best-known magazines for families. All of the stories in this issue, which focus upon children's health, were generated within a unique collaboration that we expectancy to continue.

We also trust that presenting these findings to our audiences will lead to discussion, debate and further scrutiny of inadequate policies and bureaucratic inefficiencies that cessation up guiding the health and welfare of our region's children. Chicago Parent reaches a 250,000 parents in the city and suburb while the Reporter is read by way of several thousand politicians, community activists, educators, journalists and disturbed citizens each month.

further in addition to holding our management accountable, part of the debate around our findings must include an admission of the importance of the character race and economics play when it issues to understanding, treating and fighting these riddles Our magazines, for instance, originally pursu this as a series forward how the environment affects children's well-being.

yet we settled on "health" as our focus, we recognize that many of the health transactions we raise will only change when these larger issues are dealt with forward a far greater scale.

A drastic reduction in lead poisoning would necessitate higher-quality affordable housing and more information for middle-class families renovating older homes

Making a real nick in asthma would require more accessible health care, including better public education from doctors and hospitals about the disease's dangers.

These stories raise make anxiouss that our region's health professionals must address. however other officials and activists should pay stop up attention to these reports as well, along with the ease of us.

I haven't had the disembowels for instance, to ask my relative whether she's had her baby proofed for lead exposure, though I've been in their apartment protracted enough to see its peeling paint and cracked plaster firsthand. I in no degree realized that every day she devotes there could do irreversible damage, and I fear her mother may not, either.
