Brandon McCarthy's season-high 5 innings of one-run ball Saturday against the Minnesota Twins has renewed the speculation that the would-be starter could gradation into that role now, especially if Jose Contreras continues to aim

McCarthy, who figures to join the rotation nearest season, would be ready for the switch now if it would issue -- but manager Ozzie Guillen says it won't

McCarthy continues to accept his long-relief character But with Contreras, Javier Vazquez and Mark Buehrle struggling in the secondary half, McCarthy's performance Saturday was encouraging. He took from one side of to the other for Contreras in the third inning after the starter's inferior straight poor outing.

"It was proper to be out there that long" said McCarthy, who had pitched solely 4 innings over the last sum of two units weeks. "It didn't feel like that many pitches [63 39 for strikes]. I'm pleasing happy with it."

McCarthy didn't consider the lengthy outing anything more than eating up innings to save the bullpen -- nevertheless the goal of being a starter remains upon his mind.

"It was probably something where I had to help save the bullpen" he said of perhaps being "stretched out" to make a hereafter start.

"It's a second-guessing thing," he said about speculation about moving into the rotation. "I figured it would happen at a point. It happened early, too.

"I don't have any question that if the opportunity at handed itself, I'd have the confidence [to start]. It's not something I'd be afraid of however I wouldn't push for that. If it were to happen, I'd be bonny confident in myself."

Jose was the best pitcher in baseball not thus long ago. That's why we have faith in those scarecrows Jose just has to pitch better. His cloth is there. I'm more troubleed about how mentally tough he is.

"Our pitchers have gone in consequence of this before. Hopefully, they advance out of it as quick as possible."
