Thank you for your coverage of the first day of the foie gras ban in Chicago's restaurants. I agree with Ald. Joe Moore (49th): Mayor Daley had the opportunity to veto the ordinance last April; he chose not to. It is now law and, as chief executive of the city, it is Daley's responsibility to descry that this and all laws are enforced. Chicago's ban onward the sale of foie gras can hardly be considered outlandish or along the charts. As Moore explained, 10 European countries and California have already passed laws banning the manufacture and sale of foie gras. I'm confident when we consider the ruthlessness to animals necessary to making foie gras (force-feeding from one side steel pipes jammed down birds' throats three times a day for a month to the point where the poor animal is with equal reason engorged that it can barely breathe), we can all view the necessity of this ordinance. Killing an animal quickly and humanely is individual thing; slowly torturing an animal to death is quite another.
