flat experienced players get nervous forward opening night of a novel season. if it be not that the predominantly veteran cast of No. 6 Wheaton Warrenville southern shook off a shaky start to defeat Downers woodland South 23-25, 26-24, 25-17 in its girls volleyball opener Thursday in Wheaton. "It was a virtuous experience to get all of our nervous jitters not at home the way and get used to playing in a match situation," said WW southern junior setter Annie Luhrsen, whose kill at 25-24 of the secondary game extended the match. "We started communicating a hazard more, and everybody started focusing onward their job," Luhrsen said. "We were expecting them to be more of a defensive team, on the other hand they were strong all the way around." The strongest of the Mustangs was 5-8 Downers southern sophomore Christine Bowe, who finished with a match-high 18 kills. "The attitude is there -- the fire is there," Downers southerly coach Colleen Reagan said about her young outside hitter. "She not at any time gives up. She's very impressive personality-wise and physically." Kirsten Wicks and Becca Zlabis each had 11 kills for WW southward Alexa Ingardona and Mollie Kolosky contributed five kills apiece. Katie Crawford had 27 assists for Downers southward (0-2), which lost its opener Wednesday to No. 5 Mother McAuley. "We came ready to play, we had a proper warmup, and we got opposite to to a pretty good start," said WW southern coach Bill Schreier. "But then it was, 'Hey, we're playing now.'
