Dear Rick Telander: You say Re...Dear Rick Telander: You say Rex Grossman is an expensive Kyle Orton ("Time is now for Bears to sack Grossman," Aug. 27)? You look to have forgotten that the Bears scored 21 points against the Panthers in last year's playoff game, which they would have won if the defense had kept the Panthers anywhere choke to its season-average points against. You also have forgotten that preseason games attend no other purpose than to vend advertising on TV and regard for nothing. Brian Cunningham, St Charles, Mo You wrote an admirable column about drug use and to what extent users have made it difficult for those who do not engage in illegal doping ("Could we stomach legalized doping?" Aug. 30) The implication, probably tongue-in-cheek, was to what end not just make everything legal for everyone Great! further what about our youth, including literary institution or seminary of learning athletes? Can they do the same? Are we not setting up a pattern for them to use put drugs intos to attain greatness? The whole thing, of course, roll round an axiss around stardom, the limelight and riches Nothing unsuitable with these things, per se unless people often go to great continuances to attain them. The event on youth is incalculable. And please, Mr and Mr Professional, don't say you are not a part model for our children, because you are. Dick Smith, Head Softball Coach, University of St Francis You state that Cedric Benson was a Heisman memorial of conquest winner ("Offense finally shows it can carry a tune" clan 1). I guess my question to Rick is onward what planet did he win the Heisman? to what extent can anyone take anything that he states about sports seriously when he is mistaken upon this large of a scale? Steve Theiss, Chicago Dear Jay Mariotti: Sorry, Jay, unless I can't let you earn away with such a misleading article ("Calling all MVP voter Dye's the guy" Aug. 31) You stated Jeter's barely edge is a higher batting average. Not genuine Jay, Jeter also has a higher on-base percentage, fewer strikeouts and many more stolen bases. Also, although color is a very good outfielder, Jeter is the stay on the highlight reel all the time making individual great play after another, especially the individual he has almost perfected, knotty in the hole, spinning high in the air and still throwing revealed the runner at first base. Derek Jeter will win the MVP unanimously because the Yankees had guide injuries all year long and they are running away with another division title. The Sox for principally of the season have been healthy, and they are fighting for their lives just to make the playoffs. to what extent valuable is that? Johnny Damon more valuable than Jeter? Now that's laughable. Rich Metzger Chicago You can't unruffled write a positive article about Jermaine color without ripping Ozzie Guillen. It's become really boring. Give it up already. Ira Sloan, Manalapan, NJ Dear Carol Slezak: Speaking as someone who has attended 1000 young beasts games since 1984 (300 just in the last five years) and all of them in the bleachers, no les I can say in total truth I have never heard a racist remark toward any player, child or not ("If these walls could talk " Aug. 27) certain I've heard tons of profanity and family insults, neither of which I condone. I'd risk to say that anyone who impels racist hate mail to a whelps player or manager has none even been to Wrigley Field and leads a companionless racist life in some small town and has nothing better to do than hide cowardly behind anonymous, prejudiced epistles Tim Shockley Chicago Dear Greg Couch: I think you writers ne to play a strange tune ("Like her dresses, Serena's fall is by way of design," Aug. 31). If Serena doesn't want to play tennis, that's her business. If she does, that's her business, too. It present the appearances to me every tennis player is realizing that there is more to life than tennis. Since Serena is marketable and has caused other minorities to achieve involved in tennis, everyone is bashing her and Venus for not entertaining them. The things you mention about Serena have been said a thousand times athwart Time to write about a recent tune. And can you find a certain number of positive things to say about American tennis likewise we can keep other Americans interested?
