Asked, these years later, to annotation on a 1957 "Letter to the verse Editor," I had to ask back to Chicago what all this was about. from the time the present editor sent me copies of one as well as the other Paul Carroll's "Notes in succession Some Young Poets" and my published answer I'd found in old notebooks that Carroll had that year published my metrical composition "Mores," which was one of the earliest metrical compositions in what would become my inferior book (1961), and probably catalyzed "Was a Man."
