In his plain note to the confessional in extent poem, Listening to the Candle: A metrical composition on Impulse (1992), Peter Dale Scott anticipates that a certain readers "may be puzzl or equable disappointed, by this poem's relationship to its predecessor Coming to Jakarta." To them he shows the promise of a third and final drawn out poem (the forthcoming Minding the Darkness) toward which Listening to the Candle is moving.
