Mid-March, the striped bass ease past Rio in subordination to the chop, the currents that wrap sand like mist around the bridge piers. Locals don't mind wind contrary to the tide, or the heavy dilacerationed skiffs that fish inside theirs. Late afternoon they will scratch a not many keepers from the sandbar with a pop-ey jig or Rebel pass rounded shallow. By June the spawned-out fish will ride downriver again.
