Calvin Forbes introduced the character of Shine to his readers in The work of Shine ( Burning robe 1977). Part invention, part fable Shine returns in the fourth and final section of Forbes' principally recent volume, which reprints a of the poems that appeared in the earlier main division For readers of contemporary verse Shine's function in these metrical compositions appears to bear some relation to the deities and mythic ancestors in the rhyme of Kamau Brathwaite or Nathaniel Mackey. Like Ogun in Brathwaite's The Arrivants,
